Ms Morrow takes us back once more to the small town of
. Book two of the series
starts with the oldest Hearth brother, Gabriel, being left without a bride at
the altar. Gabriel returns home to the ridicule of his teenage son, Slade. Sweet Home,
Sparrow Walker, the daughter of a military disciplinarian, is the principal at the local high school. Slade is a trouble maker, but so far he hasn’t done much more than trespassing and Ms Walker wants to try her award winning program with Slade. She doesn’t want to see another young man in prison since her brother is serving time and being shunned by her family.
Sparrow meets the resistance of Gabriel with the parenting plan. He won’t attend meetings since he’s tried to deal with his son in his own way. Gabriel is busy running the family business, but his desire to help his son has him turning to Sparrow.
When Slade is suspended from playing baseball due to his grades, he runs away and Sparrow and Gabriel search for the missing boy. The couple discovers their respect for each other has grown into an attraction. Gabriel has too many old wounds and won’t open up to Sparrow, let alone tell her he loves her.
Ms Morrow writes a poignant story of an emotionally wounded family. She covers several sensitivity issues such as single parenting, sibling rivalry, discipline, and imprisonment. Each subject is handled with the ease and style of the skilled author Ms Morrow has proven herself to be. The sweet romance that takes place between Gabriel and Sparrow adds to the enjoyment of the story. I found it hard to put down for long because I became invested in the characters.
